Instagram Reels - What are they? What do I need to know?
At the beginning of August, Instagram launched Reels, its competitor to video-sharing app TikTok. This is the latest development in the drama behind potentially banning TikTok in the United States. So what are Reels? What do I need to know about them?
What are Reels?
Reels are 15-second video clips that have special creative features, like AR filters, music, and other editing features. The feature is strikingly similar to the functionality of TikTok. The draw of TikTok has always been that videos from any content creator, despite follower count, has the ability to go viral on the app. To mimic this, Instagram has dedicated the top portion of the Explore page to Reels called the Stage, where anyone can get discovered despite the number of followers they may have.
Instagram will follow the privacy settings of the user, so Reels created by private accounts will only be available to that user’s followers, and reels by public accounts can be found in the Explore page on the Stage. When a user posts a Reel, it appears on their account as a post, in contrast to Instagram stories that can be saved as highlights on a user’s profile.
What do I need to know?
With the banning of TikTok in the US seeming more likely as time goes on, Reels provide a soft landing space for content creators and brands alike. Although Reels are new, the concept of the feature is not. Reels will make it easier than ever before to create your own video content right on your phone, on-site in your restaurant, without having to bring in a video production company for promotions. This accessibility is unmatched, and can be lucrative to you if you begin using Reels. By being an early adopter of Reels, you can stand out ahead of competitors, and make relatable and fun content that your customers will love to watch.
